Videogame: a recognized medium for positive impact <\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After\u00a0nearly two\u00a0years of working on the creation of tools to support the emergence of ethical projects and studios in the video game industry, we had the opportunity to develop our thinking on the use of video games themselves.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The French media are regularly the scene of heated debate\u00a0regarding\u00a0the impact of video games. Our aim here is not to\u00a0participate\u00a0in this highly volatile debate\u00a0–\u00a0which is too broad to be addressed in a single article\u00a0–\u00a0but to offer a perspective on proven uses of video games in social and educational contexts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

A medium whose use can have a positive impact <\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t

During the\u00a0<\/span>Video-Games\u00a0for Good<\/span><\/b>\u00a0project, all partners were able to see the value of this medium. Of course, we still face strong opposition when we talk about using video games to educate young people, whether from educators or their parents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Once this barrier\u00a0is\u00a0overcome, we\u00a0have been\u00a0able to test and\u00a0validate\u00a0the direction of this project. Games, and video games in particular, can have positive societal impacts, and integrating this into a studio\u2019s design or identity is not an insurmountable burden.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

A less \u2018green\u2019 form of entertainment: <\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One factor to consider is the medium of video games: they are fundamentally less environmentally friendly than other non-digital forms of\u00a0games. Nevertheless, there are several ways to improve this efficiency:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  • Optimising the game to reduce its size (its weight\u00a0on the network),<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
    • Optimising performance: not needing to buy a new device to play it,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
      • Whether the game is online or not: being able to play it with a simple installation on your computer or console, without relying on network servers,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
        • \u2026<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

          By combining these best design practices with the significantly greater impact that video games can have compared to other forms of recreational activity, it is possible to play or create video games whilst\u00a0remaining\u00a0true to one\u2019s values.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

          An interest recognised by the European Commission <\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

          Every year, several projects are co-funded by the European Commission for the creation of educational video games (known as \u2018serious games\u2019). To take a few examples via\u00a0<\/span>ERASMUS+:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

          • the programme co-funded\u00a0the EcoQuest2 project, in which gaming plays\u00a0a major role: video games and live-action role-playing (LARP) aim to strengthen young people\u2019s ecological skills and capacity for environmental action, whilst helping educators teach these skills through playful learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
            • The D-ESL project aimed to create mini-video games to support English language learning, as well as to enable teachers to create their own educational games.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

              But the ERASMUS+ programme is not the only one! The Creative Europe programme also supports projects involving the creation of video games through various calls for proposals on different themes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

              • The\u00a0<\/span>MEDIA Video Games and Immersive Content Development<\/span><\/b>\u00a0call aims to support the pre-production of video games with high creative value. This call is, however, intended for so-called \u2018commercial\u2019 games, i.e. non-educational ones.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
                • Other calls support the creation of \u2018serious\u2019\u00a0video games on more specific themes. For example, the Pixel Media project was co-funded by the CROSS-SECTORAL Media Literacy call: this project involves the creation of a video game to help young people develop critical thinking skills\u00a0regarding\u00a0online information and media consumption, particularly concerning the dynamics of influencers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

                  \u00a0<\/span>Scientific studies have already proven this, and this project allows us to once again\u00a0validate\u00a0the value of video games and the impact they can have by conveying values, as well as knowledge and skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
